    Preview: Path of Exile

    April 27th, 2012

Hello Toastervision patriots and new readers alike.  Today I want to tell you about an up and coming free-to-play title from Grinding Gear Games that’s been in production for over 5 years and has managed to keep a relatively low profile in the Action RPG genre.  I’m well aware Diablo 3 is less than 20 days away from release, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about today. The ARPG scene has been dominated by Blizzard with Diablo series of games, and I admit that I’ve spent many years playing Diablo 2 on and off for months at a time.  With games like Titan Quest, Torchlight, Dungeon Siege, and Baldur’s Gate having a huge influence on my youth, it’s safe to say that I’m a bit obsessed with spending countless hours running through dungeons to acquire gear that has no use but to be prestigious or traded for aforementioned fake gold in an e-community.  This leads me to my first point and what immediately caught my attention with Path of Exile.  Read on, fellow dungeon dwellers, to see why I think Path of Exile could be a budding star in a newly-revived genre.

    Preview: Brick-Force

    March 30th, 2012

After getting interested in upcoming Minecraft/FPS hybrid Brick-Force late last year, I was quick on the buzzer when it was time to sign up for the game’s closed beta. Soon enough, I ended up with some free time to kill and received that wonderful email from Infernum Productions informing me that I made it into their closed beta.  Naturally, I took some time to sit down with the free-to-play game and give it a few hours to let loose.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get much time to check out the map editing process, aside from strolling around someone’s map while they were making it.  The good news is that I was able to put in some quality time with their FPS aspect.

If you’re interested in hearing what I thought about Infernum’s debut title, keep on reading!

What if you could change the game you are playing?

    February 18th, 2012

Two days ago the Swedish indie game developer Erik Svedäng  released a blog post that took gamers by storm.  He and his four associates had this idea for an adventure game that is like nothing we have seen before. The game is called else { Heart.break() }.  A lot of programmers will be familiar with the characters in that game title, and there is a reason for that.  It’s been in the works now for over two years, and thanks to the Nordic Gaming Program, they are officially one year into the actual production of the game.  While the game is said to still be at least one year away from completion, the buzz on the internet is strong.  Erik describes the game as:

“a game about being able to change reality. It is set in a mysterious world made up of computers and their code; a place where bits have replaced atoms. The player – who is assumed to have no previous knowledge about programming – gets access to the code and is taught by other characters how to modify it. As the story unfolds the possibilities of what can be reprogrammed, hacked and controlled increases greatly. Eventually the inner parts of the gameplay code are revealed and the barrier between our own world and the game starts to dissolve.”

Humble Indie Bundle 4 is out!

    December 13th, 2011

It’s that time again, and only for another 14 days!  The wonderful people over at Humble Bundle, Inc. have given us a new bundle of 5 games to enjoy.  You may ask yourself, “Isn’t this just a deal where you get a few games for some super discounted price?”  The answer is a hearty no.  You pay whatever price you feel is right, but pay over a certain amount and get an extra 2 games.  That brings it to a total of 7 games!  The amount you need to pay usually hovers between 5 and 7 dollars in order to get the extra games.  It’s determined by the average payment, meaning you don’t have to pay over the average if you don’t want the extra 2 games.  Give them 2 dollars if that’s all you can spare, but you won’t get the extra 2 games.  Keep in mind however that some of the funds from all Humble Indie Bundles go to charity!
