Preview: A Weekend in Tyria – Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend

gw-2-classes

My first experience with Guild Wars 2 occurred just over a year ago amid the hustle and bustle of the San Diego Comic-Con. As I walked up to the demo station where the game was playable in 45-minute-session form, just one of many games on display that year, I wasn’t aware of just how deeply the game would infest itself into my memory. My time in the land of Tyria passed quickly and before I knew it, I was back among the countless hordes of convention attendees, excited about what I had seen and eager to hear more about the game…but part of me just wanted to get right back in line and go for another round.

That’s the catch with Guild Wars 2: after spending nearly seven years invested in a singular MMO, I didn’t think I had it in me to really get interested in another one. Too many titles had thrown themselves at the heels of the monolith that is World of Warcraft, and I simply hadn’t seen enough of the game to judge for myself if it was worth the plunge. That changed a few weekends ago, when I was able to spend every waking moment of my free time with ArenaNet’s upcoming MMO. It’s safe to say that not only is my interest in what they’re bringing to the table satisfied, but I am more than ready to shout the praises of this game from the highest peaks.

Path of Exile

Hello Toastervision patriots and new readers alike.  Today I want to tell you about an up and coming free-to-play title from Grinding Gear Games that’s been in production for over 5 years and has managed to keep a relatively low profile in the Action RPG genre.  I’m well aware Diablo 3 is less than 20 days away from release, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about today. The ARPG scene has been dominated by Blizzard with Diablo series of games, and I admit that I’ve spent many years playing Diablo 2 on and off for months at a time.  With games like Titan Quest, Torchlight, Dungeon Siege, and Baldur’s Gate having a huge influence on my youth, it’s safe to say that I’m a bit obsessed with spending countless hours running through dungeons to acquire gear that has no use but to be prestigious or traded for aforementioned fake gold in an e-community.  This leads me to my first point and what immediately caught my attention with Path of Exile.  Read on, fellow dungeon dwellers, to see why I think Path of Exile could be a budding star in a newly-revived genre.

Tera 1

Ah yes, The Exiled Realm of Arborea; some of you may know it better as TERA, that wonderful MMO that everyone’s been talking about. Some are even going so far as to tote it as the “WoW-Killer™” that many have been waiting for. With some rather risque armor, an intriguing new combat system and some traditional aspects, it’s definitely been getting a lot of notice in the MMO market. TERA’s official open beta happened last weekend, and I have to ask: what do we have to show for it?

BackGround05 - Kopie

After getting interested in upcoming Minecraft/FPS hybrid Brick-Force late last year, I was quick on the buzzer when it was time to sign up for the game’s closed beta. Soon enough, I ended up with some free time to kill and received that wonderful email from Infernum Productions informing me that I made it into their closed beta.  Naturally, I took some time to sit down with the free-to-play game and give it a few hours to let loose.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get much time to check out the map editing process, aside from strolling around someone’s map while they were making it.  The good news is that I was able to put in some quality time with their FPS aspect.

If you’re interested in hearing what I thought about Infernum’s debut title, keep on reading!

Preview: Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage

GasGuzzlers03

Every now and then, I get an aching in my bones for a taste of something that will make me pine for the “glory days of gaming”. While I usually rectify this natural impulse by loading up something like Planescape: Torment or even Super Meat Boy,  occasionally a guy just needs to blow some stuff up. Croatian developers Gamepires have been hard at work with their upcoming racing/car combat title Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage, and I got a chance to sit down with an early version of the game a little while ago. It’s an interesting little title and I’m pretty stoked to see where it ends up. Hit the jump and find out just what is goin’ on with this gorgeous display of explosions that Michael Bay would be proud of.

What if you could change the game you are playing?

Computer Room

Two days ago the Swedish indie game developer Erik Svedäng  released a blog post that took gamers by storm.  He and his four associates had this idea for an adventure game that is like nothing we have seen before. The game is called else { Heart.break() }.  A lot of programmers will be familiar with the characters in that game title, and there is a reason for that.  It’s been in the works now for over two years, and thanks to the Nordic Gaming Program, they are officially one year into the actual production of the game.  While the game is said to still be at least one year away from completion, the buzz on the internet is strong.  Erik describes the game as:

“a game about being able to change reality. It is set in a mysterious world made up of computers and their code; a place where bits have replaced atoms. The player – who is assumed to have no previous knowledge about programming – gets access to the code and is taught by other characters how to modify it. As the story unfolds the possibilities of what can be reprogrammed, hacked and controlled increases greatly. Eventually the inner parts of the gameplay code are revealed and the barrier between our own world and the game starts to dissolve.”

Demo Impressions: Twisted Metal

Twisted-Metal-Hitting-North-America-February-14

If you’ve spent any time with a Playstation since its inception, you’re probably somewhat familiar with Twisted Metal – with seven installments over the lifespan of the entire Playstation brand (the original came out in 1995(!), for reference) it’s a momentous occasion when a new one is getting close to release. In just a few weeks, we’ll finally get our hands on the eighth title, which also happens to be the first full-fledged PS3 release. While you’ve been waiting for the chance to get your vehicular carnage on, I’ve been spending quite a bit of time with the game’s demo, which is out on the PSN until February 7th. It’s safe to say that this is not a game to pass up.

Preview: Tribes: Ascend

Tribes-Ascend

I have never played the original Tribes games. I know, I know, that makes me some kind of PC gaming heretic or something. When its first incarnation, Starsiege: Tribes launched way back in 1998, I was not really all on the up and up when it comes to playing shooters, let alone high-octane, jetpack oriented fragfests. As I slowly ingrained myself into the ideas of playing with a keyboard and mouse rather than a tired old console controller, I felt like this series was worth looking into, but never actually got around to taking the plunge.

Fast forward to PAX Prime in August, and I finally got my hands on Tribes: Ascend, the free-to-play rebirth being developed by Hi-Rez Studios and set to come out sometime next year (officially). I’ve been playing quite a bit of the game’s Closed Beta over the past couple weeks, and I have a few thoughts about what the game’s all about.

What it’s about is being TOTALLY FRIGGIN’ AWESOME.

Preview: Diablo III

diabloheader

When you say “Diablo”, something magic happens in the mind of a gamer. The storied hack-and-slash action title has ripped its way through history and earned a spot as one of the most influential and enjoyable PC games of all time. A tale of Heaven and Hell, Diablo brought communities together and allowed players to have countless hours of fun and stories to tell.

The problem with having a series so close to the hearts of millions is trying to repeat your success. The last Diablo title shipped in June of 2001. That’s TEN YEARS, people. When Diablo III was finally announced in 2008, I wasn’t sure if it was going to match the immense legacy its predecessor left behind. Announcement of a real money Auction House, the lack of mod support, and other decisions kinda steered me further away. A few days ago, I got a Closed Beta key.

Diablo III is, without a doubt, one of the best games to look forward to next year.
