Need More C’thulu? Try Magicka: The Stars are Left

I’m a pretty big fan of Paradox Interactive – they don’t seem to be afraid to take a risk when it comes to publishing a title, and I really like that adventurous spirit. One of the bigger titles they’ve given a green light to, Arrowhead’s Magicka, has enjoyed some impressive success since its release last year. Now it’s getting another expansion entitled “The Stars are Left”, which is nothing less than “a horror-mystery inspired by the popular Cthulhu Mythos.” They’re promising not only a new adventure with which to take three of your buddies on, but new items, monsters, magicks, robes, achievements and other goodies that expansion packs are wont to have. Sadly, there is no mention of the inclusion of fine hattery.

An interesting thing to note is the fact that you might not necessarily need to buy the expansion pack to play it. According to Arrowhead, “as [long as] the host player in a co-op group owns the content, every one of their co-wizards will be able to co-experience the mind-killing terror of the new expansion.” That seems like a very cool deal to me, and one that’s going to save a lot of people money.

There’s no firm release date for this yet, but they have given a general “Winter” time frame for it. Stay tuned for more info, and feel free to peep that teaser trailer up above.

Grand Theft Auto V Is A Thing, Trailer Nov. 2nd

cropGTAV

Yep. Title says it all, really. Rockstar announced the next title in the storied Grand Theft Auto series today with a big ol’ logo on their front page. It’s a bit of a departure from previous titles, given that the Roman numeral is in a different font (and someone has clearly taken the time to let us know that V stands for five). Beyond that, there’s not a whole lot we know. A trailer has been promised for us on November 2nd that will hopefully tell us all sorts of info that we need to know, most notably where we’re going to be spending far too much time bowling with our cousins.

Review: Dark Souls

Dark-Souls-Preview

When Demons’ Souls launched in 2009, developer From Software offered players a game that didn’t coddle them offer much in terms of hand-holding. Light on story and heavy on intense and challenging (but not unfair) gameplay, tales of the game spread through word of mouth and the title has now cemented itself as a PS3 Greatest Hits title. In response to this, From went back to the drawing board to build a game that was bigger, better and, most importantly, harder. That game was Dark Souls, an RPG with its heart firmly ripped from the chest of its spiritual predecessor. It’s also one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played.

Review: Dead Island

DeadIslandpic1

As a personal fan of zombie flicks, I found myself torn between the gameplay and the concept. Even though today’s gaming community is always “bloodthirsty” for more undead encounters, there does seem to be quite a large supply of a newly acquainted genre to quench the demand of its mindless followers. Welcome to the dawn of Zombie Survivalism, where all your graphically disturbing images and heart racing scenarios are yours for the making. It’s not the fear driven excitement that redefines this horror genre, but the fan base for one particular scenario: Apocalyptic pandemonium (of the undead sort of course). In this first person, free roaming RPG there’s a lot to be told from both sides of the board. Few times can you find a great concept that is properly represented with the gameplay provided, yet in this case there is plenty to cheer for, but also some key components to jeer at. On either side of the coin, this game displays some impressive qualities that are rarely seen in first-generation releases and aims to surprise even the most skeptic of players. In every survival scenario there is always an escape plan, and in this case it’s to get the hell off this island…

Review: Nuclear Dawn

Nuclear Dawn

“The world has changed, it has been swept clean by the winds of change. Do you think you can survive it?”

Slightly redundant? Yes. Which is odd because Nuclear Dawn is by no means a wash, rinse, repeat multi-player game. Taking a cue from a legendary game, Natural Selection, that meshed RTS and FPS together, as well as a few pages out of Modern Warfare’s book, the people over at InterWave Studios concocted a consortium of bullets and tactics. Built on Valve’s hallowed, if not slightly dated, Source engine, the first thing one will realize about this game is how good it looks. Sure, the telltale signs of the aging engine are there, whether it be low-texture weapons or just a bit too sharp of corners, but Source games are still popular. After all, it’s not about the graphics, it’s about the content.

Scribblenauts on iOS!

scribblenauts2cover1

Well, this was certainly an unexpected release. It turns out that a “remix” version of Scribblenauts, the DS game where you make stuff appear by writing about it, just hit the iTunes App Store. What all can you expect from said remix? That’s an interesting question, and one I intend to answer for you right now…if you hit the jump.

Rumor: Jak & Daxter HD Collection in 2012

JakandDaxter

Hey, everybody! We’ve got a bit of rumor milling for ya today, and if you’re a fan of Jak and Daxter you might want to listen up. With the recent string of HD re-releases on the PS3, we’ve gotten to see quite a few of our favorite PS1 and PS2 titles come back to life in a remastered form. If the rumor we have is to be believed, then the two platforming heroes up above might be joining the likes of Kratos and Wander in glorious HD.

At a recent Uncharted 3 press conference all the way out in Oslo, Naughty Dog director Justin Richmond may have unintentionally confirmed the existence of a Jak and Daxter PS3 collection. Such a collection would contain the first three games (Sorry, Jak Racing fans) in full HD. As this is just a rumor, I wouldn’t get too excited just yet. Naughty Dog’s working full-time on Uncharted 3 as it’s only a few weeks away from launch (although technically the multiplayer is out now – more on that later). Still, it’s pretty neat to see more classics coming out of the woodwork. We just need a Ratchet & Clank collection now, and we’ll be up to our long pointy ears in PS2-era platforming.

Review: The Binding of Isaac

bindingofisaac

When my mother took away all she considered a corrupting influence on me, I was sad. When she locked me in my room, I was worried. When she arrived with her knife raised high to the skies, ready to end my life in a sacrificial appeasement towards God, I fled deep into the basement. I have endured countless horrors, the depths of dark caverns, and finally her attempt on my life has been thwarted.

This is the story of Isaac.

Review: Hard Reset

hard reset

There comes a time when you’re playing through certain games where something just clicks. You realize what makes this specific game so amazing and you can’t wait to come back to it again and again, to find every last nook and cranny and make sure everyone knows how much you love this title. I never found that moment in Hard Reset, but I did find something else: an appreciation for their ideas, but not necessarily their execution.
